Mule account freezes

Should banks be required to freeze suspected mule accounts quickly, even before fraud is fully proven?

📍 India

In early August 2026 the Supreme Court directed the RBI to issue, within four weeks, an SOP for temporary debit holds on mule accounts linked to cyber fraud, and asked States and UTs to set up money-restoration mechanisms. Reports say digital arrest complaints fell from 123,672 in 2024 to 16,377 by June 2026, with Rs 18.05 crore restored in 36,290 cases.
