Digital arrest scams

Should 'digital arrest' scams be made a separate criminal offence with tougher penalties?

📍 India

In late July 2026 a Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant urged the Centre to consider standalone legislation defining 'digital arrest' as a specific offence, with stricter punishment. The government has said it is drafting legislation covering digital arrests and deepfakes. In July 2026 the CBI also arrested three people over a Rs 2.07 crore digital arrest fraud.

Actor deepfake penalties

Should creators and platforms face strict penalties for AI-morphed explicit videos of film actors?

📍 India

In early October 2026 an AI-manipulated explicit video using footage of actors Janhvi Kapoor and Jr NTR from the film Devara: Part 1 circulated online. Several film personalities condemned it, Jr NTR called for legal action, and filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma argued that celebrity reactions amplified its reach.

Mumbai lake water cut

Mumbai's lakes hold about 92% of required stock but BMC kept a 10% water cut. What should happen next?

📍 Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

On August 16, 2026 Mumbai's seven lakes held about 92% of capacity, roughly 323 days of supply, with four lakes overflowing. The BMC retained the 10% cut that began on May 15, citing the need to reach a full-year stock by October 1 and possible El Nino effects on rainfall.
