📍 Kolkata, West Bengal, India
In 1936, Mohammed Salim, a Kolkata footballer born in 1904 in Metiaburuz and trained as a pharmacist, played for Celtic in Glasgow with no boots, only bandages on his feet (Al Jazeera, 20 Nov 2022). On 28 Aug 1936, in front of about 7,000 fans, Celtic beat Galston 7-1 and he set up three goals (The Celtic Wiki). With Mohammedan Sporting he won five Calcutta League titles in a row (1934-38). Homesick, he went back to Kolkata. Decades later, when he was ill, his son wrote to Celtic, who sent £100; the family never cashed it. He died in 1980 without a national honour. So, why did India forget him?
