Maharashtra Shakti Act

Should Maharashtra's pending Shakti Act, with tougher penalties for crimes against women, be implemented?

📍 Maharashtra, India

The Maharashtra Shakti Bill, passed by the legislature in December 2021, awaits presidential assent and has stalled over revisions after central criminal law changes. In May 2026 demands to implement it grew after incidents in Badlapur and Nasarapur, and opposition parties criticised the state's law and order record. Maharashtra ranks second nationally in crimes against women, per NCRB-based reports.
