📍 Purulia, West Bengal, India
Malati Murmu runs a free school for about 60 children from a mud hut in Jiling Sereng, a village in the Ayodhya Hills of Purulia, West Bengal (The Logical Indian, 27 Aug 2026). She started teaching 8-10 children at home when schools shut in 2020, and villagers built two small classrooms of mud and tin. The children learn Santali in the Ol Chiki script first, then Bengali, English and maths. The nearest high school is about 25 km away. She studied up to Class 12 herself and takes no salary. "We don't ask for anything. Only that the children come," she told Education Post (Jul 2025). So, who should pay her?
