📍 Patiala, Punjab, India
On 16 June 2023, Sepoy Navaneetha Krishnan D, 23, of the Army Medical Corps, was passing the fast-flowing Bhakra canal near Patiala, Punjab, when an old man begged for help: a young woman was being swept away (The Tribune). Nobody else went in. He ran about 100 metres in uniform, dived in, pulled her to the bank and gave her CPR. She lived. "I just jumped into the canal, it was instinctive," he told The Tribune (22 Jun 2023). The Army Chief honoured him days later. He is from Madurai district, Tamil Nadu. So, a fast canal and a stranger drowning: would you jump in?
