Dr Sambhu Nath De, born in 1915 in Garibati, Hooghly, showed in the journal Nature in 1959 that cholera bacteria release a toxin that drains the body of water (Wikipedia, IJMR). That finding underpins oral rehydration, the simple ORS packet. Nobel laureate Joshua Lederberg nominated him for the Nobel Prize, yet no Indian science academy elected him and he never received a major award in India. "I have been dead since the early 1960s," he said at a Nobel symposium in 1978 (The Better India). He died in Kolkata in 1985. So, why did India forget Dr S.N. De?
