📍 Gopalganj, Bihar, India
Naveen Srivastava of Gopalganj, Bihar, has performed the last rites of more than 1,200 unclaimed bodies (ETV Bharat, 24 Mar 2026). It began in 2004-05, when his cousin drowned in the Ganga at Allahabad and the body was never found. During Covid he turned an old vehicle into an ambulance: 183 patients taken to Covid centres, 48 bodies taken home, 22 abandoned bodies cremated. His free "Sankat Mochan" ambulance now serves 24 villages, and his free learning centres, running since 2017, teach about 800 children. "That day I decided: no one would leave without dignity," he told ETV Bharat. So, who should give unclaimed bodies their last rites?
