Filmmaker threats

How should governments respond when filmmakers face threats over films about contested history, as in South Korea's 'The Assassin(s)'?

📍 South Korea

On 5-6 October 2026 South Korea's culture minister condemned threats against the cast of 'The Assassin(s)', a thriller dramatising the 1974 attempt on President Park Chung-hee. Conservative groups say it distorts history, while 19 film industry groups distinguished criticism from pressure on individuals. The film passed 2.23 million admissions.
