On 28 Oct 2026 at about 08:54, a Renfe AVE (Madrid to Seville, 397 on board) ran into the back of a stopped Iryo train (147 on board) near Urda, Toledo, on the Madrid–Andalusia high-speed line. Emergency services put the death toll at 64 by 12:36 CET. A signalling fault had stopped several trains that morning. Government sources quoted by El País and ABC say a control-room operator may have cleared the AVE while the Iryo was still ahead; engineers say the line's automatic LZB protection should have stopped it.
