Data protection readiness

India's data-protection rules move toward full enforcement in May 2027. Are businesses and citizens ready?

India notified the DPDP Rules on 14 November 2025 with an 18-month phase-in. A May 2026 timeline says a soft-enforcement period ends around November 2026, with the Data Protection Board gaining power to impose penalties of up to Rs 250 crore from May 2027.
