India deepfake law

India plans a law against deepfakes with penalties and asset freezes. Is this the right approach?

📍 India

A 29 July 2026 report says India is moving to legislate against deepfakes used in impersonation scams and fake videos. Platform rules from February 2026 already require labelling of synthetic content and removal of flagged unlawful content within three hours. The IT Minister has also hinted at AI-specific legislation.
